Abstract
Exceptive constructions have figured prominently in the discussion of quantificational phenomena in natural languages (Keenan and Stavi 1986; Reinhart 1991; von Fintel 1993; Moltmann 1995, 1996; Lappin 1996; Hoeksema 1996; Peters and Westerståhl 2006). 'Generality and Exception' explores both the syntax and semantics of exceptive constructions, and shows that the correct understanding of these constructions must draw on insights from their interface. The book is aimed at linguists, philosophers of language, and cognitive scientists interested in the syntax and semantics of natural languages.
