Abstract
This article analyses the final congress of the largest communist party in the West (the Italian Communist Party), marking its transformation into the non-communist Democratic Party of the Left. The article analyses the transformation process as well as the internal political debate where a section of the party opposed the change, some members leaving to set up a new communist party in Italy.
