This paper describes an ongoing journey, which began in the autumn semester of 2005 and continues to the present day, with the aims of promoting good teaching at the University of Salford, UK. It discusses the challenges faced during the redesign of a civil engineering degree programme and how these techniques have transformed it into an award winning teaching environment. Specifi cally, the teaching of structural engineering is addressed, tracking the development from common modules shared between three engineering disciplines, through to the integration of practicing structural engineers and the positive impact this had on the students and their understanding of structural behaviour.
