Abstract

A mixed method approach to research has developed into a more prevalent strategy within a business discipline, as the process can yield rigorous data that can be used to shape government and institutional thinking. This paper critically analyses the background to mixed method research, explicates how it has been used to investigate contemporary social issues and proposes that its usage can provide an extra dimension within management research. The paper utilises a recent study into employment tribunals, an institution that has inherently proven difficult in gaining access to, due to the confidential nature of the cases and the bureaucracy enveloping the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). This study explains how a mixed methodology was used to carry out in depth exploratory research and how the process of devising a mixed methodology framework aligns the best data collection method with what data is required.
