Abstract

In writing this book we have aimed to produce a practical handbook for students and newly qualified social workers that can help in the development of core skills. We have set out the theoretical underpinning that we have taken as our point of departure in terms of a relationship-based practice (RBP) and person-centred (PC) approach, exploring the value of these throughout in terms of care skills and in relation to skills for assessment and intervention. We have identified key theories and models for practice that we feel complement RBP and PC approaches. We hope that students and newly qualified practitioners will be able to see how the work that they do is underpinned by a theoretical basis (whilst noting the benefits and limitations of such). We hope that you enjoy the book and find its content to be relevant and accessible. In addition, there is a companion website which offers additional links and resources.
