Jon Haynes and David Woods have been joint artistic directors of Ridiculusmus Theatre Company since 1992, writing and performing in a body of work that has increasingly ventured into socially engaged territory. In 2015 they premiered a new work called Give Me Your Love. This is the second in a trilogy to be presented in 2018, Dialogue As The Embodiment of Love, a series of plays associated with innovative treatment approaches for contemporary mental health issues. This article presents a contextual discussion before a conversation between Woods and Haynes. The introduction considers the interdisciplinary research processes and creative collaborations with medical and psychological specialists and sets these against the immersive improvisational aspects of devising and performing the work, elaborating on the staging of the event as experience. In Give Me Your Love, for instance, the ‘absence’ of the complete actors’ bodies foregrounds, amongst other things, the experience of the present audience, in their box. The article considers the experience and afterlife of the performance, as a form of public engagement before the conversation in which the two writer-performers discuss their personal and collective efforts to conjure, channel and recreate intoxication. The conversation reflects on a question the writer performers have been asked in response to their research and performance and that they ask themselves: ‘What’s it like when you take it?’
