Considerable innovation in both anaesthesia and surgical techniques have ensured permanent change to elective surgical nursing (Toftgaard, 2009). The physical assault on the body during surgery has been dramatically reduced over the last decade (Darzi, 2007). 'Day-of-surgery' admission, day surgery, short-stay surgery and 'one-stop' surgery are now increasingly the norm for the majority of patients experiencing elective surgery in the UK.
