Abstract

In spite of recent improvements in the school exclusion statistics for African-Caribbean children, they are still around three times more likely to be permanently excluded from school than white pupils. Given the increasing importance of education in achieving a secure future, this study set out to investigate the impact of exclusion on a sample of 33 African-Caribbean young people who had been supported by voluntary organisations, to discover whether and how they had overcome their experiences of school exclusion.
