Abstract
This article challenges the consistency and coherence of the concept of neo-corporatism by exploring its characteristics as an ideal-type and relating it to the concept of political exchange. It argues that, in its existing form, it has limited use value in explaining the relationship between interest groups and the state in advanced democracies.
