The recording of, and the provision of, audio or video recordings of lectures has taken place for many years, however, the advent of audio compression (e.g. MP3) and more recently video compression (e.g. MP4 for video enabled iPods, 3GP for mobile phones or MPEG3/4 for PDAs) means that it is now possible to record lectures and create reasonably compact audio and video files which can be made available for students to download almost immediately once the lecture is over. The aim of this project is to develop and evaluate an online resource of compressed audio and video recordings of lectures, together with supporting learning materials. The material will be stored as small ‘podcasts’, rather than large single file, suitable for download to small mobile devices such as iPods, PDAs and mobile phones. The evaluation will assess ‘podcast’ accessibility, the utility of this technology as a teaching aid in modules at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level and dissemination and integration of specific ‘podcasts’ into modules across the new Salford Business School and the wider University.
