In September 2005 a credit rated PDP and study skills module was introduced into the first year of the part time HNC in Housing Studies programme. The module combines practical whole group skills development sessions on topics such as essay writing, referencing and presentations skills with six small group tutorials with a personal and academic tutor. Using qualitative research methods, the project aims to gain feedback from students and tutors on the impact this has had on students ability to become, what Zimmerman (2000) has described, as confident ‘self regulatory’ learners able to take control of their own learning by defining learning goals and monitoring progress in achieving them. A particular concern will be to establish whether or not inclusion and assessment in a credited module has a significant impact on students meta cognition and on tutor understanding of and capacity to support students in a developmental PDP process. The experience and perceptions of students and tutors on two programmes with a similar intake, but where support for PDP has been provided by a non-credited rated personal tutorial system, will be used as comparators. These programmes are the first year HNC in Environmental Health and the second year of the HNC in Housing Studies programme.
