Large class sizes in Computer Science make it very hard to provide formative assessment, and require summative assessment strategies to consider efficiency above validity or alignment. This is particularly noticeable in the "Internetworking" module, which has a very practical learning outcome that has to be assessed using an examination question based round an unrealistically simple problem. A further implication of this is that it is impossible to assess the "process" by which the student has answered the question. This project proposes that the use of a graphical simulator can solve the problems with the summative assessment of this module, and can also provide formative assessment to improve the quality of learning for the students. The project intends to develop such a simulator, and pilot its use on students taking the "Internetworking" module. The aim is to demonstrate that simulation provides a valid and efficient method of assessment, without requiring extra resources.
