Abstract
The clinical practice experiences of student nurses exposes them to a variety of patients/clients from multi-cultural backgrounds. To care for them requires the student to have the knowledge and skills which will enable them to deliver care that is responsive to both their cultural backgrounds and health care needs. This project sought to marry innovation in curriculum development with a learning and teaching approach which would enable the student to participate in a more active and collaborative way with the teacher . The Pre-registration Nursing Diploma - Cultural Awareness ( Level 2 ) modular team decided that Problem Based Learning ( PBL ) could be the answer to enabling this to take place and the findings to date appear to suggest this . Three groups of final year students have participated in the project and as a result of the PBL activities and development of the skills and knowledge of the Project team , the School has adopted the PBL approach for its new pre-registration Diploma programmes. Two members of the team have attended a Visitors’ Workshop at McMaster’s University and three members have presented the development and findings at National and International Conferences. We are currently in the process of writing up the final stage of the project and developing a learning package on cultural awareness for students and educators . Included will be trigger case studies , facilitator guidelines and other material used in the module.
