This book chapter assesses notions of 'risk' as they are used in relation to lesbian and gay foster carers and adopters, making use of other research to argue that the suggested risks to children are unfounded, or - rather - about attempts to maintain and uphold heteronormative and traditionally gendered values. The author makes use of his own research to examine approaches to the social work assessment of potential gay/lesbian carers and to argue for an anti-oppressive practice.
