Abstract

This paper was delivered at the Conference 'Ambiguity and the Search for Meaning' at the Jagiellonian University, Institute of English Philology, Krakow, Poland, April 2008. It explores the work of Gil Ott (1950-2004): poet, writer and publisher associated with the Language Poetry movement. The paper reads Ott's 1996 book The Whole Note for its ‘search for meaning’ in the face of death, arguing that it constitutes an illustration of Keats' notion of negative capability.
