Abstract
There is much literature citing contributions that urban green spaces make towards human physical, social and mental well-being. However, quantitative evaluation is challenging. This research investigates Urban Environmental Quality (UEQ), which provides a quantitative measure of quality based on assessment of physical landscape characteristics in Salford, Greater Manchester using an integrated Geographic Information System and remote sensing approach. Five variables have been chosen representing urban landscape characteristics (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index, Normalised Difference Built-up Index, building height, surface temperature, and proximity to water). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to enhance dimensions of variability between the variables. The index was created by combining the first four PCA components, weighted using eigenvalues. This index was positively related to a previous Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) based index. Pixel value ranges were larger in lower quality LSOAs, reducing as UEQ increased. This highlights land use fragmentation in urban centres
