Research unwrapped is a popular series to help readers make sense of published research by undertaking a detailed appraisal in a careful and considered manner. In doing so we can advance our knowledge and understanding of any research topic and apply it to our practice. This process is designed to assess the usefulness of the evidence in terms of decision making and application to practice. It is important that the appraisal is critical and that midwives are evaluative in their reading of research. This month, I have chosen an interesting research paper in terms of the aim, approach to collecting data from women and their wider family and the findings which connect specifically to the Unicef Baby Friendly initiative (BFI). Hoddinott et al’s (2012) paper is rather lengthy but well presented and detailed; as an open access journal I suggest you obtain a copy and judge it for yourself; it is well worth reading.
