Abstract

This study investigates the connections between Blake’s uses of papers and the paper makers who manufactured these media between c. 1789 and 1795. Relating the papers’ countermarks and watermarks to particular paper-making firms, I introduce a series of micro-histories that will shed light on the production of paper in the second half of the eighteenth century and on Blake’s uses of these papers in his illuminated printing. By considering the papers that Blake purchased for his printing ventures, I hope to establish the significance of a group of individuals whose contributions to illuminated printing have been rarely acknowledged.
