Abstract
This is a copy of a presentation on listening tests delivered at lectures and invited talks. Optimisation of acoustic spaces and audio equipment is often dependent on objective metrics that can be measured directly and defined numerically. However, the perceived performance of such objects, or their sound quality, is always mediated by listeners. In order to assess perceived quality, listening tests should be designed in a fair and appropriate manner, avoiding biases and collecting the required data for a useful analysis. This talk will focus on the considerations required when designing and deploying listening tests, looking at some ways to avoid some of the biases and sources of errors that often affect them. Some of the standard techniques for testing in audio will be discussed. Finally, examples of appropriate statistical analysis and interpretation of results applicable to such tests will be demonstrated.
