Abstract
The 1980s was in many ways the most creative, exciting era for the left in decades. It has had an impact on British politics and culture ever since. Many of its once trail-blazing radical ideas are the now mainstream consensus; especially around issues of equality, inclusion and diversity. Internationally, however, most ways of measuring the strength of Left parties showed them to be weakening. British Labour was confined to Opposition for the entire decade and the dominant trends in the party engaged in continuous policy revision. The international context reinforced the prevailing view that most of what had been taken for granted in social democracy was now redundant.
