A great deal of research has been carried out investigating those criteria that contribute towards effective learning. A review of this literature carried out by De la Harpe (1999) may be represented by the ‘Learning Wheel’ illustrated below. It is suggested that satisfactory application of the eight criteria identified will significantly help create effective learners. The first part of this paper discusses each of the eight characteristics in turn and provides examples of how the School of Construction and Property Management at Salford and the School of Civil and Structural Engineering at Plymouth are applying these characteristics on their respective construction Programmes. The paper identifies number seven: ‘Effective Learners Take Responsibility for Their Learning’ as perhaps the most important of all eight characteristics – the ‘keystone’ of successful construction related education. One popular term for this characteristic is Student Centred Learning (SCL). The second part of this paper examines SCL in some detail in an attempt to demonstrate why it is crucial to the creation of independent, confident and articulate graduates who are able to ‘hit the ground running’ after commencing employment. This paper addresses the themes of teaching and learning best practice, case studies and experience of best practice and learning innovations as they impact on university level construction education.
