Abstract

The publication sets out the context and rationale for a specific approach necessary to design and launch a post-graduate course in journalism in the context of a transitional country like Turkmenistan. It presents the features of the modern university in the age of knowledge economy and the way universities operate in the West as research centres and drivers of innovation for industries and culture alike. It also briefly presents some of the instruments and mechanisms used by the higher education to stay relevant in the age of technological change and to deliver high calibre graduates for the job market. Having set these parameters out, it goes on to present features and constituents of a modern course in journalism with skills and knowledge sought by the media industry. At each stage, recommendations are offered how Turkmenistan could go about setting up a course like this in its specific sociocultural and political context.
