Abstract
In this paper, we describe an early colonial farm complex near Stellenbosch. We show how the single, eighteenth century farmhouse, with roots in the European vernacular, was transformed into a werf in the Cape manorial style, probably when its owner achieved local prominence as a wine farmer in the early nineteenth century. We argue that detailed studies such as this contribute to a revision of the nature of colonialism in southern Africa.
