I am qualified social worker who is registered with the HCPC. II currently work at The University of Salford as a Lecturer in Social Work in the Practice Learning and Admissions Team, in the School of Health and Society. I have worked in Health and Social Care field for 25+ years predominantly in various roles within the children and families area; residential childcare, fostering and adoption, child protection, working with women and their children in the area of domestic violence and rape. I have a keen interest in creating and developing experiential learning projects for students and a passion for community activism, various avenues i.e. 'Our Home Our Salford' project which I set up from it's conception with SueTurner and colleagues , involving and encouraging students to work with people within the community and sharing their skills whilst developing their practice. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/36004/1/our%20home%20A5%20flyer.pdfMy research interests have been in community activism around areas such as working with the Refugee community,and the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Community. I have been involved in supporting students to raise funds and equipment to help women and their children in Uganda with colleagues in Social Policy. This collaboration has resulted in social work students having the opportunity to experience elective placements in Uganda. Gabi's current interests are the mixed race identity, Black Feminist Theory and has recently written a paper on this topic, which you can see within my repository.
