Abstract
Communication and information technologies have become major resources in higher education [1]. With declining staff: student ratios and an increasingly divergent range of students, CAL programs are now recognised as an important means of enhancing the teaching and learning process [2]. A CAL package has been developed for use in the School of Acoustic and Electronic Engineering at the University of Salford. Macromedia Director was the chosen authoring software. While the material has primarily been developed for use within the campus-based undergraduate environment, it has obvious applications to the continuing education of those in industry for whom knowledge of acoustics is required, such as those who are taking our Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Noise Control. Certain modules may also be used as teaching aids on Electronic and Electrical Engineering degree courses, as the fundamental principles are the same. The CAL package, entitled “Waves: Analysis and Synthesis”, is a multimedia-rich learning support package for students on undergraduate courses. There is wide diversity in students’ prior conceptions of the subject area, their experience of learning in general, and their existing skills and competences. The CAL package is intended to support students’ independent learning by providing a remedial resource to help all students reach a baseline level of understanding.
