Abstract
This paper presents the findings from a study into the experiences and preferences of a sample of older people in using the footways in their local neighbourhood environment. This was complemented with a walkability audit of the footways in the street and neighbourhood in which the research participants lived. The output from the study is the writing of design guidance for practitioners, and recommendations are provided in this paper for the design width, materials and shared use of footways. This design guidance on footways in part of a design series on the inclusive design of the external environment, more details of which can be found at www.idgo.ac.uk
