Abstract

'Manchester at Work' explores the life of the city and its people, from pre-industrial beginnings through to the early 21st century. It charts the rise and fall of the textile industry, the town's role as a major inland port, post-war industrial decline and late 20th century regeneration. The volume shows how this erstwhile shock city of the Victorian age has transformed itself on many occasions and is now a thriving post-industrial centre of arts, culture, and commerce.
